If you’ve got dentures, it can be tempting to pay less attention to their care – after all, they’re “false teeth,” right? They’re not as fragile as the real deal, surely? In reality dentures need the same level of care as regular teeth to ensure we maintain good overall health.
Keeping your dentures clean is not only good for the denture but also good for any remaining teeth that you may have. Dentures are as prone to the build-up of plaque, tartar and stains as teeth, and those issues can spread from the dentures to the teeth if not looked after.
How to look after those dentures
If you have any questions on how to best do this, you should always consult with your local dentist, who can provide you with in-depth information on denture care. However, at home there are three simple steps towards keeping those dentures clean:
Soak: The first step is to immerse the denture in a solution of warm (not hot) water with a denture cleaning tablet added to it. Make sure the entirety of the denture is covered in the solution.
Brush: You should use a specialised denture brush for this task, as it will have softer bristles. You should also avoid brushing the denture with toothpastes or pumice, which are an abrasive that can cause scratches and damage to the dentures.
Rinse: Finally, once soaked and brushed, give the dentures a really good wash under running water.
