The first thing you need to know when you discover that you’ve got a chipped or broken tooth is that you should see the dentist as soon as possible. The longer you wait, the more damage that might be done to the tooth, and the higher the risk of infection. If that happens, you’ll possibly need to have the entire tooth extracted instead.
Treatment of a chipped or broken tooth can vary wildly. If only a small piece of the tooth’s enamel has broken off, the repair can be done in a single visit to your dentist. If the damage is more severe, the repair process might take longer, leading all the way to removal.

Dental Filling or Bonding
For small amounts of damage, dental filling or bonding will be the ideal solution. Here, the dentist simply fills in the damaged area with a filling, and if that piece of tooth is facing the front of the mouth (and would therefore affect the smile), the dentist will also use a procedure called bonding, which is a tooth-coloured composite resin, so it’s not noticeable. For these procedures, the dentist will likely not need to even numb the tooth.
Dental Cap or Crown
If there’s decay in the tooth, or the damage is more extensive, your dentist might recommend a dental cap, instead of a filling. To do this, the dentist will file away part of the remaining tooth, and the cover it with a crown, or tooth-shaped cap, designed to protect the remaining tooth and restore its appearance. This procedure generally involves two visits; one in which X-rays are taken to check the roots of the teeth and the surrounding bone. Assuming there’s no further issues that would affect the procedure, on the second visit, the dentist will insert the Dental Cap.
Dental Veneers
Specifically for the front teeth, when they get chipped or damaged, a dental veneer can make the mouth look whole and healthy again. A veneer is a thin shell of tooth-coloured porcelain or resin that covers the front of the tooth, with a thicker section to replace the broken part of the tooth.
