“Wisdom tooth extraction” is something that many of us would rather not think about. Just hearing those three words together can conjure images of painful dentist procedures, and painful recovery time.
However, if you have any concerns about your wisdom teeth, on any level, you are best off talking to your dentist about a wisdom tooth extraction.
Why might you need to have your wisdom teeth out?
Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed. Not all wisdom teeth need to be removed immediately, either. In many cases a simple assessment with your dentist will be enough to determine whether the tooth can remain in the jaw indefinitely, should be monitored, or is best removed immediately.
If there is any sign of trouble, however, it’s likely that your dentist will recommend you remove the tooth immediately. This is because a partially impacted wisdom tooth can cause problems for the entire mouth; it might become a cause of gum problems and create cavities and holes in other teeth. In extreme cases it might even crack or break neighbouring teeth.
For this reason, if your dentist recommends that you remove a wisdom tooth, or wisdom teeth, it’s because there’s a risk of far more significant pain and mouth damage in the near future.
Does a wisdom tooth extraction hurt?
For most people, not nearly as much as the reputation would have you believe. In fact, not every wisdom tooth extraction requires a surgical procedure to extract; in many cases it’s a straightforward extraction that will cause you minimal discomfort (but is still necessary to ensure the health of your other teeth).
In other cases, surgery is required to be able to extract the impacted wisdom tooth, but these remain routine and uncomplicated procedures with minimal pain and risk. Your dentist will be able to walk you through any concerns you may have.
Again, extracting wisdom teeth is often the best way to preserve the overall health of your mouth, and the sooner the problem is identified and the tooth removed, the better. The friendly team at Parra Dental is always available to talk to you about your dental hygiene and recommend a best course of action for any concerns that you might have.
